Activities, News and Events for Bigs and Littles
June 2008
You can tell it's summer again in Houston. Apart from the instant perspiration when you step outside, and the instant chill you get when you step back inside, there are plenty of things to do around town for your and your Little. Be sure to look closely at the list, which you'll find by clicking on the big red button below. Another exciting activity is starting later this month - photography classes! Thanks to H-E-B for sponsoring this unique experience for the second year. You'll find the details on how to sign up below. As always, thanks for volunteering! So What Do YOU Do With Your Little?
What do you and your Little do together? We want to know! Send in some pictures and a description of where it was taken, and we'll include them in upcoming issues of Matchline. Who knows - you might give another match a new idea of what to do! If you have some pictures of you and your Little to share, drop Rob Walter an email at rob.walter@bbbs.org. A New Way to Bowl for Kids' Sake
Day-long event scheduled for July 12th
It's bowling time again, and that means another great opportunity for you and your Little to support Big Brothers Big Sisters! Bowl for Kids' Sake is one of the agency's biggest fundraisers. It's simple - you get your friends, and/or your Little to join your team, and each person raises $110. Then, you all come out to our BOWLING PARTY on July 12th and bowl two free games (shoes are free too), while having a great time! You can choose one of three two-hour blocks during the day. If you've never been to a BFKS bowl, you're missing out! There are raffle drawings, giveaways, food, and most importantly, FUN! There's plenty of time to recruit your friends. By registering online, you'll receive your own fundraising page where friends and family members can go to donate to your team. You don't have to be a Big to participate. If you have some friends who were thinking about being a Big but don't have the time to mentor, this is a great way to get involved, without spending a lot of time. We also invite companies to get involved by helping us spread the word among employees. Head to www.gobighouston.org/bfks for all the information you could ever want about Bowl for Kids' Sake, and we'll see you on July 12th!

Photography Classes and Contest Announced
| |
All participating Littles get a FREE camera!
For the second year, BBBS is partnering with H-E-B to bring our matches an amazing opportunity to learn about photography from the pro's. For five weeks you'll learn the basics of photography. Not only are the classes free, but each Little will receive his or her own FREE digital camera! With that camera, you and your Little will take pictures to be entered in a photography contest, also sponsored by H-E-B. Winning photographs will appear in a health-and-fitness- themed calendar that will be distributed across the Houston area. The winners of last year's contest were announced in January. Pictures from 20 Littles were chosen to appear in the "On the Move" health and fitness journal. They had a great time and really enjoyed the recognition. So how do you participate? 1. Pick a class. We have two classes available: Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Saturdays 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Each class will run for five weeks beginning June 23rd. There will be no class the week of July 4th. 2. Be sure you and your Little can attend ALL the classes.
Wednesday classes: June 25th July 9th July 16th July 23rd July 30th Saturday classes: June 28th July 12th July 19th July 26th August 2nd Again, it is important that you attend ALL the classes. All classes will be held at the BBBS main office, 6437 High Star Drive. You will be responsible for transporting your Little to and from the classes. 3. RSVP ASAP! Space is limited! Send your name and your Little's name to Rob Walter at rob.walter@bbbs.org. Classes will be filled first-come, first-served.

It's the Tea Train!
Several matches had a great time riding in the 2008 Art Car Parade inside the BBBS/Sweet Leaf Tea "Tea Train" on Saturday, May 10th. All the matches had a part in painting the 1976 school bus, which was donated by Sweet Leaf Tea. It's the second year BBBS and Sweet Leaf Tea teamed up to create an Art Car Parade entry. Thanks again to artist Kermit Eisenhut for directing the group! Click here for more pictures of the painting.Before...
...and after! Thanks to Big Sister Laura Upton for the photo below.

If you've been matched for three months or less, we'd like to treat you to a BLT: Big Little Training. The BLT will begin at 10:00 a.m., and makes for a great match activity. If you've been matched for three months or less and would like to attend, RSVP to Match Support Specialist Magdoly Ferreris at magdoly.ferreris@bbbs.org, or (713) 522-1811.
