When Oved Essary came to Houston from Dallas, he was a World War II veteran and a former Big Brother who saw a great need in the Bayou City. As President of the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce, he saw many boys who were left fatherless due to the tragic combination of the war and a ship explosion in Texas City that took scores of lives. He decided to do something about it by starting what was then Big Brothers of Houston.
In its first year, Big Brothers of Houston matched 30 boys with leaders in the community as a solution to juvenile delinquency. Today, because of Oved’s determination and caring, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston serves more than 2,300 children annually. In 2007, Oved’s children, Leilani and Delmore, and dear friend, Richard Baile, started a college scholarship fund in honor of Oved and his legacy.
“Of all the things I’ve done, Boy Scouts and the war, having started the Big Brothers Big Sisters I am most proud of,” Essary says.
